For the feast of St. Augustine of Canterbury ...

... go read the anti-Papist screed of the Dean of the Anglican Cathedral of Sydney.

To be fair, it is also a defense of WYD.

I must say, however, it is refreshing to see Western Anglicans boldly proclaim their belief in something, even if it is the evils of Rome!

Well, Sydney Anglicans are are rather unusual breed. To all intents and purposes Sydney RCs are middle-of-the-road, not even high church, Anglicans; Sydney Anglicans are Southern Baptists.

However, an old law school classmate of mine finds that the route of the Pope between the Cathedral, where he will be staying, and the Randwick Racecourse, where the popish orgies will occur, is right in front of his house. And he discovers that they will be setting up porta-confessionals along the parade route with a view to enticing some of the 92% of Sydney Catholics who haven't been to church in the past ten years and more, back to sacramental regularity. I cannot but assume that many people will think that the porta-confessionals are porta-loos and will be very surprised when they unzip and find that they have company. But never mind.

My law school classmate wants to get seriously into it all -- it's not often that a superstar visits Sydney -- and asks me to advise as to how he might avail himself of the services of the porta-confessionals. Correct me if I'm wrong: I've suggested that he might say, "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It is 40 years since I last confessed and I am sure you don't want me to go entirely there. But in recent memory I have had lustful thoughts about my secretary; I have been envious of a professional colleague's material success; and I have been angry at my next door neighbour about his lime tree dropping fruits into my garden. For all these sins and any I may have forgotten, I ask forgiveness."

Is that more or less the drill?
